Thermolite Moves to New Location: An Example of Window Upgrades and the Effect on Building Performance
In April of 2014, Thermolite moved to a new building in South Bend, Indiana at 3502 West Sample Street after over 35 years in the same location on South Lafayette in South Bend. After a year at our new facility, located next door to the South Bend Chocolate Factory, we have been able to observe key differences in the window performance as compared to our previous location that demonstrates the importance of windows on the entire building’s energy load and comfort levels for tenants.
Our previous building suffered from the ability to maintain proper temperature control. This was due to inefficient windows that had poor thermal properties, and allowed heat flow to escape through the glass and frame. The older windows also exhibited air leakage that further made the heating systems work harder to compensate and keep the building at a comfortable temperature.
Thermolite’s new location on West Sample Street is at a much newer facility with more efficient windows. There is a noticeable difference in the thermal performance of the windows, as our window-lined front office maintains a comfortable temperature, even when standing close to the glass. This allows us to keep our heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems at a reduced setting, as the demand is not as great. Reducing energy demand can be a major cost-savings measure, as our interior window systems have been found to lower energy costs by 20% on average.
If you’re in the South Bend area, we invite you to stop by and take a look at our facilities and experience the much improved comfort of our temperature controlled environment. Our windows are not only effective, they remain aesthetically pleasing and allow natural light to shine through, unlike other temperature control window options, like blinds or film.
