With the recent changes in Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) criteria for Department of Defense (DoD) Antiterrorism Standards for Building (view our previous post for a full summary of window requirements) those responsible for historic preservation may be wondering about their roles in complying with these standards.
Antiterrorism Standards vs. the National Historic Preservation Act
These UFC standards for DoD inhabited buildings are not permitted to override regulations set forth by the National Historic Preservation Act. However, a DoD building that is determined to be an historic property must still meet antiterrorism standards.
Solution: Interior Window Systems
Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act requires “determination of the effects of the anti-terrorism measures upon the building and, if adverse, how the effects can be avoided, minimized and/or mitigated.” A win-win solution to complying with the UFC DoD Antiterrorism Standards for Buildings while preserving historical buildings is installing interior blast security window systems.
